What are good fats? They are called Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)Mylinda Johnson HERBALIST, HYPNOTHERAPIST, NLP PRACTITIONER

Eating EFAs and foods containing these good fats help you Feel Fuller and more Satisfied, they also Regulate Hormones to Boost Metabolism, Improve Mood, Concentration and Break Down Bad Fats in your body. What’s the first thing we grab for when we feel tired, lack concentration and feel down? Sugars and high carbohydrate foods! And we usually eat more out of control than normal. When we feel good we eat better, have more energy and make better decisions with what we eat.

Now just a quick blurb about sugars and carbohydrates. They are the real culprit to putting on body fat. What's more, many low-fat and fat-free products are highly processed and contain added sugars and MSG to make up for the lost flavours, so don’t be fooled.

Getting back to EFAs, don’t get too carried away with just weight loss, think about the bonus benefits for your entire body. They boost your immune system, decrease inflammation, improve sleep, cell membrane function, regulating pain, preventing blood clots, regulating blood pressure and nerve transmission, improve skin conditions & increase energy levels.

There are two families of EFAs, omega 3 fatty acids and omega 6 fatty acids.  These fats are considered essential as they cannot  be produced by the body.

Food sources of omega-3 Fatty Acids are: cold water fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, and trout, olive oil, flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts.

Food Sources of omega-6 fatty acids are: Nuts (walnuts, brazils, almonds and cashews), seeds (flax, hemp, sunflower, sesame, pine nuts, and pumpkin seeds), Olive & Evening Primrose oils.

Now we can’t leave out coconut oil (no it is not an EFA), but recent research has found that it has good health benefits being weight loss, boosts immune system, aids digestion and regulates metabolism. These benefits can be attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid renowned for antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-fungal, antibacterial and soothing qualities.

Now just to give you something to think about, your brain is made up of about 65% fat (mostly EFAs), what do you think happens without them!?
